The Battles
Fort Sumter
On April 10, 1861 confederate general Beauregard demanded the Union to surrender Fort Sumter, however union general Robert Anderson refused to give it up. Two days later the Confederate army opened fire on the union soldiers. The union soldiers did not have enough supplies to put up an equal fight so the at 2:30 the next day Anderson surrendered the fort.
Bull Run
The battle at Bull Run was on July 21, 1861 in Manassas, Virginia. This was the first major land battle in the Civil War. It ended in confederate victory.
Antietam
General McClellan and his troops attacked General Lee and his army on September 16-18 1862 in Washington County. This was the most brutal and bloody battle America has ever seen. There was no sure winner, but the Unions strategy was victorious.
Vicksburg
From May 18- July 4 1863 Grant's union soldiers attacked Pemberton's confederate solders in Warren County. On July 4, they couldn't take much more and decided to surrender Vicksburg .
Gettysburg
General Robert E. Lee attempted to attack union soldiers in Adams County on July 1-3 1863. However he was unsuccessful and the battle ended in Union victory.
Atlanta
On July 22, 1864 General Hood tried to attack General Sherman's troops in Atlanta. He too was unsuccessful and the battle ended in Union victory.
Chancellorsville
The battle at Chancellorsville took place from April 30- May 6, 1863 Spotsylvania County. General Joseph Hooker was attempting to attack the left flank of General Robert E. Lee's army. Lee's troops were able to defend themselves in time, and Hooker's attempt became a failure leaving the battle in a confederate victory.
Appomattox Courthouse
This battle took place on April 9, 1865 in Appomattox County. Lee and his troops started making their way to the union army but little did they know that the unions infantry was gaining on them. Soon enough the confederate troops were surrounded by the union army on three different sides. Lee surrendered to Grant, making this the last battle in Virginia.
