The Gag Rule
The Gag Rule banned all petitions trying to abolish slavery. The house was prohibited from even reading them on the floor. It was passed on January 28, 1840. These antislavery petitions would not be accepted or acknowledged. The Gag Rule lasted until December 3, 1844 when it was repealed thanks to the efforts of John Quincy Adams and his supporters.
